Hardwood flooring uses real wood, either solid planks or engineered layers with a wood veneer top. It's the premium residential flooring option: natural beauty, long-term durability, and the ability to be refinished. Our family has been installing hardwood in Utah for decades. We bring samples directly to your home and use visualization tech to show you what each species looks like in your actual space before you commit.

What we bring when hardwood is on the table

We carry a curated selection of solid and engineered hardwood across the species, widths, and finishes that work best in Utah homes. Not every species under the sun. The right ones. Every product we bring is one we'd put in our own home. That's the standard after 80 years.

Species

  • White oak: the most popular in SLC right now, for good reason. Neutral tones, tight grain, ages beautifully.
  • Hickory: high contrast, rustic character, one of the hardest domestic species available.

Finish Types

  • Wire-brushed: adds texture, hides everyday wear
  • Smooth/satin: clean and classic
  • Hand-scraped: more rustic character

Solid vs. Engineered

Most of what we carry in Utah is engineered hardwood. Here's why: Utah's low humidity, especially in winter, causes solid hardwood to expand and contract more than it does in humid climates. Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer over a layered core, which makes it significantly more stable in dry air. Same look, better performance for our climate.

That said, we carry solid hardwood too. We'll tell you which makes more sense for your specific rooms.

Why hardwood works well here, and what to watch for.

Utah's high elevation and dry mountain air create one of the more demanding environments for hardwood flooring in the country. Humidity in the Salt Lake Valley regularly drops below 20% in winter (Salt Lake City averages ~16 inches of annual precipitation, NWS), which causes wood to contract and gap between planks.

The good news: with the right product selection, it's not a problem. Engineered hardwood handles dry air significantly better than solid hardwood. Plank width matters too. Narrower planks move less than wide ones. And proper acclimation before installation (letting the wood sit in your home for 48–72 hours) makes a measurable difference.

We'll factor all of this into our recommendation. You shouldn't have to think about humidity when you're picking a floor. That's our job.

What hardwood actually costs, installed.

Installed hardwood in Salt Lake City typically runs $11–$18 per square foot, including materials and labor. The final number depends on species, plank width, finish, and the complexity of your rooms (subfloor condition, stairs, transitions).

We give you a firm, itemized quote at the consultation, before we leave your home. No follow-up calls, no surprises.

Hardwood costs more upfront than laminate. But it's also the only category you can refinish, which means a well-maintained hardwood floor can last 50 years or more. Over that timeline, it's often the most cost-effective option.

Not sure hardwood is right?

Not every room needs hardwood. If you want help making the decision without guessing, route back through the consultation instead of trying to solve it from a product page alone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hardwood Flooring

Is hardwood flooring good for Utah's dry climate?

Yes, with the right product. Utah's winter humidity drops below 20%, which causes solid hardwood to expand and contract. Engineered hardwood handles this significantly better because its layered core resists moisture-related movement. We recommend engineered hardwood for most Salt Lake City homes and will walk you through the options at your consultation.

What's the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?

Solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of wood. Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer bonded to a layered plywood or HDF core. Engineered hardwood is more dimensionally stable in dry climates like Utah's, can be installed over concrete slabs, and costs slightly less, while looking identical once installed.

How much does hardwood flooring cost installed in SLC?

Installed hardwood in Salt Lake City typically runs $11–$18 per square foot, including materials and labor. The final price depends on species, plank width, finish, and room complexity. We provide a firm, itemized quote during the in-home consultation.

Can you refinish engineered hardwood?

It depends on the veneer thickness. Most engineered hardwood can be lightly sanded and refinished once or twice. Thicker veneers (3mm+) allow for more refinishing cycles. Solid hardwood can be refinished many times over its lifespan, which is one reason it lasts 50+ years.

How long does hardwood flooring last?

With proper care, hardwood flooring lasts 50 years or more. Solid hardwood can be refinished multiple times, extending its life indefinitely. Engineered hardwood typically lasts 20–30 years depending on veneer thickness and maintenance.
